How do you want to retire?

I feel like I have spent my life retiring from something to move on to the next chapter.

I retired from my childhood at 20, when I became a mother. I retired from motherhood at 40 to become a teacher. I retired from teaching at 60, to become a writer, but always taking some wisdom from my life before to inspire me on my new adventure. Being a young mother, I had the energy to play with my children, and the imagination to make their lives magical. And I went to school to get my degree for teaching slowly but surely, and graduated at 40 from college the year my eldest son graduated from high school. I can’t say I actually retired from motherhood (once a momma, always a momma), but my children had become more independent, and I pursued my career in teaching. I took my mothering skills and it helped me be a better teacher. I worried less about my students “liking”me, because I was knew that my role was not to be a friend. At 60, I retired from teaching with a notebook and a mind full of experiences with over 500 children, and inspiration to write. I will write to help people make sense of life, the way I see it.

If life goes on a schedule, I should be on track to write until I’m 80. I have no idea what the final chapter will look like yet, but It will be a nice ride over the hill and down the other side. Maybe it will include a Mrs Santa Claus outfit, and I can read to children at Christmastime in the library. (and to all a goodnight)
